Whale watching season is here: humpbacks return to Jervis Bay
The humpbacks are back. From May to November every year, thousands of whales pass the Shoalhaven coast on their migration between Antarctica and the warm waters of Queensland, and Jervis Bay is one of the best places in NSW to see them.
The bay is around 35 minutes from Mountain View Resort, which makes a whale watching day trip an easy add-on to any winter or spring stay.
Why Jervis Bay is special
The South Coast sits about halfway along the humpback highway, so the season here runs longer than most of the east coast. On the northern run (May to August) the whales cruise past heading for the tropics. On the southern return (September to November), mothers bring their new calves into the protected waters of Jervis Bay to rest, often close enough to shore to watch for hours.
Dolphins and seals live in the bay year round, so even a quiet whale day rarely goes home empty handed.
How to see them
On the water. Whale watching cruises run daily from Huskisson wharf through the season. Jervis Bay Wild is the local operator we point our guests to. You can read more on our Jervis Bay page.
From the headlands. Pack the binoculars and try the lookouts around the bay, or simply walk Seven Mile Beach at the end of our road on a clear morning. Spouts are often visible from the sand.
Plan your winter escape
Winter is one of the best kept secrets in Shoalhaven Heads. Quiet beaches, crisp mornings, whales offshore, and our cabins are toasty. Book your stay online or call (02) 4448 7281.
